In the end, it was sunshine and a $40,000 net gain for the Phoenix Rising School. Along the way, Sunday’s first annual art auction included thunder, lightning and torrential downpours, but the undaunted crowd carried on, bonding under one large tent and several canopies and enjoying delicious food prepared by Dawn Young and her crew of volunteers.
The bidding got off to a dramatic start, with Ruth Sparrow eventually offering $1,200 for a collaborative piece of student art called “Love,” despite determined counter offers from one of the artists’ parents. A parade of work from local talent followed, including “Sea Turtle #2” from PRS parent Laura Vasquez, a hand-made cedar and fir picnic table for two from Perry Kopchak and Mark Miller, gorgeous prints from Elizabeth Martin and a triangular painting from Brigitte Silberhorn Tomassini. Three large prints from visiting artist Stephen Bennett capped off the process, which culminated with his most popular portrait, “100 Mile Smile.”

Meanwhile, a few tips of the hat:
Dawn Young, chef extraordinaire, created all kinds of masterpieces for this event, including Crostini caramelized red onion, Anjou pear, Roquefort and Spiced Chocolate bark. Even if you don’t know what these are, you’re probably still hungry. For more information about Dawn’s catering, call 360-359-1338.
Chef Blue later fired up the barbecue and supplied a variety of delicious sandwiches.
Cindy Schorno did an outstanding job of auctioneering, regardless of weather interventions.
Sean Barden of Hidden River Music Society donated his bartending expertise, along with help from our very own board member/science teacher Jeevan Anandasakaran. For more information about Hidden River Music Society, visit http://hiddenrivermusic.org/wordpress/
Divina Klein and Dirk Mischke created beautiful music for the guests. She accompanied his operatic voice on piano. Divina is a professional musician who also teaches classes. To listen to her music, click here: http://www.myspace.com/divinaklein
The Yelm Co-op allowed PRS to purchase wine for the event at wholesale prices, saving us a bundle. For more information about the Co-op and its amazing selection of wines, visit http://www.yelmcoop.com/.
Marianne Socorro and Janine Olson decorated the tents, worked on the silent auction plus a million other details, and made campus beautiful.
Lars Olson helped prep the campus, delivered chairs and tables and helped with the keg.
Cherie and Dave Hygaard built shelves and spent days helping to prep the campus, including mowing, weed whacking and helping with the burn pile.
Jenny Bossick and Jessica Caldwell prepared the silent auction tent and the campus.
Alice Fairley spent several days prior to the event helping prepare the silent auction paperwork and set-up. Her husband Dave Fairley mowed the lawn more than once, as it kept raining.
Luis Amengual brought his sound system and provided music for the event.
John Uriate was the jack-of-all-trades, ready to help in whatever area was needed plus helping girlfriend Cailin Quirk, a.k.a. PRS Development Coordinator, stay sane.
Vicky Churchill brought her crew of volunteers to help with registration and checkout.
Those are just a few of the people who made this happen. As you will see, it really does take a village to create an auction. Here is a full list of the donors and volunteers who made this day happen:
